2025: A Positive Year for Riding & Repairs

A cycling season of delivering trusted repairs while building skills, confidence, and connections on two wheels

As we stepped into Spring 2025

There was a noticeable shift across the UK bike repair scene, as many Cycle Techs reported more enquiries and, importantly, more people choosing to cycle again.

After two seasons of rain and sluggish sales, the sun is finally shining—and so are opportunities. Bike shops are seeing a surge in kids’ bikes and e-bikes sales, with the latter often moving only with discounts.

"Cycling events are gaining momentum once again. With fewer cancellations due to weather conditions or lack of rider interest." - Overall, very positive signs for cyclists.

Enquiries are up—and not just in volume, but in quality. There's a clear decline in low-value, budget e-bike repairs and a growing appreciation for professional service and proper aftercare.

For us, it's a healthy start to the year, following nearly two years of uncertainty across both the bike trade and the wider economy.

Economic downturns are never easy, but they often bring clarity. They sweep aside poorly managed operations and open the door for more agile, creative businesses to adapt, survive—and even thrive. The bike trade is no different. While headlines continue to focus on the doom and gloom, we’ve found that turning off the news and getting out on the bike gives us something else entirely: A different perspective.

When you’re riding, everything slows down. You're reminded of what truly matters—freedom, health, community, and connection. And with that clarity, we can start focusing not just on where we're going, but how we’re getting there, and enjoying the journey along the way.

In the e-bike motor world, we're also seeing promising changes. Manufacturers are stepping up to support mechanics with better training and technical support —an investment that pays off for everyone. A well-trained mechanic can offer premium aftercare that keeps bikes running better for longer, and riders motivated to keep pedaling. That knowledge and backup creates a true win-win, benefiting both the customer and the brand.

Of course, challenges remain. Local bike shops are still closing, some distributors have gone under, and many households are watching their spending closely. In that environment, mobile bike repair services are uniquely placed to offer real value. We're

meeting customers where they are—saving them time, money, and the risk of needing even more repairs down the line.

Has walking become the new cycling?

Cycling has been promoted as a ‘cure all’ And people have been discouraged as it does not meet their needs!

This newsletter is aimed at both the public and the bike trade, and I have removed all industry jargon.

This is an interesting thought which I think deserves a closer look...

Over time I’ve seen more walkers, which is ok - good for your health requiring only a pair of walking boots and that's about it.

But where are the cyclists? Or should I say the increase in cycling numbers, especially with e-bikes?

The one growth area in cycling I have noticed in 2024, is more youngsters cycling. Mainly in mountain biking, in designated bike parks, as roads look a more dangerous place. You may like to Read : Young MTB Rider wins sponsorship .

For some years both the general public and those in the bike shops and independent repairers have been sold the belief that cycling, especially e-bikes would be an all-round “win-win” for both customer and sales/repair business alike. We were told that we’d be doing our bit for the environment by the use of rechargeable batteries.

This number's growth has not happened, perhaps the disappointment that your new bike (e-bike) hasn't met your needs, plays a part. Add this disappointment that these negatives will impact your mental health and motivation. Add this to your new awareness that parts durability is poor, and your new bike whether an e-bike or not may be poorly built.

The durability of parts and original build quality could give repair issues around added costs as ‘things don't last’ like they used to. Repair could outway the value of the bike in some cases.

Now you see why walking is so appealing, I mean how do you break the news that a e-Bike costing £4,999 is effectively worn out when servicing, parts and repair cost that of the bike. Are we heading for a throw away bike scenario where it's deemed to be cheaper to just get another one?

Don't get me wrong, I walk a lot, it’s at a slower pace, which means in beautiful Bucks hill’s, I get to see and hear more of the natural world around me and yes it’s good for me. Getting into nature is healthy as well, and got me thinking that we need to look at what we really need. Just as manufacturers produced cars with increased tech and gadgets - which seduced us into thinking they were needed. In the same way new bikes have increased levels of electronics and gadgets which all add to cost of purchase and repair, so perhaps going backwards is actually the way forward. If you can remember the bike before electronics, what could go wrong or break, a puncture, chain and tyre ware, oh yes and the odd cable. Repair cost - minimal, but now - WOW.

We need to find positives for our metal health and wellbeing, for society in general.

‘Nose to the grindstone’ - For Cycle Tech, means a skilled technician, who will look for problems...

Every job is a work of YOUR craft. Bike mechanics are not like an online discount business, many people have become accustomed to the way we are now forced to shop. That is 24/7, global, and combined with technology getting too far ahead of reality, where it could be said is not required at all.

The technicians at Cycle Tech are connected to people and offer a one on one, premium service - An authentic network of independent businesses giving back to the local community, with healthy relational exchanges taking place.

We still need real personal interaction and basic communication skills, corporately and most importantly with our customers.

‘Nose to the grindstone’ - For Cycle Tech; means a skilled technician, will look for problems; hearing, feeling and inspecting the components of the bike to pick up on worn, or broken parts. Ask’s questions about the history, type of riding and the conditions… Becoming a detective, to make sense of any issues the cyclist is experiencing, is all part of the fault finding process.

Poor quality bikes are not worth the mechanic's time, financially. With a home visit, diagnose and fix, with time searching for parts that arrive weeks later and often the wrong part. Some people then find it difficult to see value in this service,- as they can simply buy a new bike.

But these enquiries are an opportunity to share the bigger picture with the customer, as a throw away society is not the green cycling industry we are being marketed to believe, as saving the planet. That's why Cycle Tech UK, see’s itself as a community, and not an industry.

We try to work with British manufacturers, as many other designers build in planned obsolescence to their products - The practice of designing products to break quickly or become obsolete in the short to mid-term.

“The old ways are the new ways. We need to take two steps back” - The key to living is working with your hands.

Many more bikes are brought online

Cycle Tech UK recommends every new bike is assembled to the rider and handed over. Known as the PDI. Pre Delivery Inspection. Meaning it's first been safety checked before using it on the road and minimising any issues that could arise, resulting in reduced returns.

Home Bike Build And the 1st service ‘is a follow up service’ is carried out at 30 days after purchase as the manufacturer recommends, after components and bolt torques have settled in. And a time to communicate with the rider and offer recommendations, to keep them engaged in cycling. Many bikes now don’t have this 30 day service, as they did not buy from the local bike shop.

For warranty compliance it's essential to keep the service schedule intervals up to date, should a claim need to be made.

When was your bike last serviced? The M-Check assessment. Is the bike trade standard starting point. So we need to see the bike first, carry out the M-Check to get an understanding of the bike as it stands before any other work is done. This gives the technician a fuller picture of what may need doing, and certainly before giving the customer an estimate.

Make time to have your bike cared for once in a while, so it wont let you down further down the road.

But Gab made the best of it, and she enjoyed every moment being on that bike.

I could see she was very ambitious to succeed.

After a few seasons, Gab moved onto a full suspension bike, ‘A green Nukeproof’ and her levels of skill were let loose. More enthusiasm and displaying positive energy about her bike and riding it over table tops at Rushmere.

There are a few things to bear in mind when you are looking to buy a new e-bike:

An e-bike is a type of bicycle that can be used without any licence, mandatory insurance or helmet, and taken on bike paths. To avoid being classified as a moped, it must fit very specific criteria. The electric motor, limited to 250w, that is pedal-assisted only when the rider pedals. (After 2016, pre-e-bikes were fitted with a throttle) The maximum powered speed is 15.5mph. And riders must be 14 or over.
An e-bike means riding more often, or the rider is much happier to tackle a commute that was only previously done in a car.
The costs: Good e-bikes tend to start from £1,200 – £1,900, with the mid motors being the more expensive over a hub motor.
e-bikes also require regular servicing and care of the battery, with storage and charging levels.
e-bikes do weigh more than a bicycle and can make it difficult if you need to move your e-bike up steps. The better e-bikes do have a walk-assist, making it easy to manoeuvre.

Mechanical support for young rider Tom Townsend

A young rider Cycle Tech UK has recently started to support.

Tom rides for Vredestein Basso and covers around 30,000km a year, so he burns his way through components at quite a rate - we've just replaced his big chainring, chain, cassette and brake pads.

Besides Basso Bikes, the team's other primary sponsor is Vredestein Tyres which is great, since he wears out tyres quite quickly too!

With road racing cancelled for 2020, Tom decided to make a concerted attack on the UK hill climb scene. He's now completed four events, with the highlight so far being 4th place on Porlock Toll Road - he averaged 402 watts for the 14'59'' that it took him to cover the 6.5km climb!

We've been preparing his Basso before each race and wish him every success as he heads to Whinlatter this Saturday, followed by Tan Hill on Sunday

Buying a new bicycle online.

With the high demand in cycling since the lockdown, Cycle Tech UK is seeing many new bikes not being assembled correctly and customers blaming the online outlet for not setting up their bike properly. In some cases asking for their money back.

These bikes come delivered in a box ‘flat packed’ many people are not aware their bike needs a competent mechanic, to assemble and setup using the correct tools.

Some of the common issues:

Pedals cross-threaded
Steam bolts lose
Damaged derailleurs and hangers

As there has been a shortage of new bicycles in the UK, many customers are now buying from Europe. Which brings a new serious issue. The brakes are the wrong way round for UK roads. Even experienced cyclists don’t know they are riding a death trap. The UK regulations are that the right-hand brake lever operates the front brake. This is when turning right with a hand signal to let other road users know what you are intending to do and if you need to stop suddenly and you have your left hand covering the brake lever that operates the rear brake and not the front as this will cause you to go over the handlebars and into onward traffic.

E-bikes from Europe can also mean an e-bike that goes faster than 15.5 mph and has the use of a throttle that overrides the pedal assistance that is not allowed since 2016 in the UK.

The customer only becomes aware when they call a mechanic with issues with their new bike. The bike industry states that all new bicycles require a pre-delivery inspection PDI and a 30-day first service.

A 30-day first service is normally free when buying from a bike shop. As buying online is not only convenient, it means buying at a discount and the 30 days service is not free. Having the 30-day service is not a substitute for a PDI or a full service after one year.

Who is liable? The customer is entitled to a 30-day money-back guarantee. Subject to not being ridden and repacked as unopened. Do see the T&C’s before buying online and what support (After sales care) is available.

If the bike was never PDI’d (Assembled and set up correctly) It would be up to the online shop if they are going to cover any costs. If the bike was never checked by a mechanic and no 1st service carried out, it could mean the warranty is void.

Other issues is when the owner has a go, trying to fix the issue and making it much worse. This is where a PDI and a first service reduces any issues and returns.

Cycle Tech UK is advising cyclists to have a home visit when their new bike arrives to have it set up and explain how everything works. Cycle Tech UK also can arrange the fist service to make sure everything is running smooth, items like cables, crank bolts and steering require adjustments at 30 days.

Do keep a service record for any warranty issues and ask for the PDI check sheet.

How to build a new bike from a box

It is very important to have your new bicycle built/set-up correctly, for safety reasons, for brakes and gears to work correctly/smoothly and to give you years of enjoyment.
Many bicycles are now brought on the Internet and are delivered in a box.

Cycle Tech UK recommends your new bicycle is assembled by an expert to British Standards 6102 Part 1, 1992.

Pre-delivery inspection (PDI) Bike in a box build

Time 1 hour
Who is this for: Competent mechanic who has the correct industry qualification Cytech Part 1 or equivalent, with the correct tools available and knows the feel of how tight a component should be tightened to.
Note: The build and tools necessary may very to the make and model.
This POST is a basic hybrid bicycle with V-brakes (Disc brakes require different checks/adjustments)
All new bicycles and ebikes require a 1st service to be carried out, 30 days after date of purchase.

Tools you will need to build your new bike from a box assemberly:

Track pump
15 mm Pedal Spanner
Philips and flat screwdrivers (Gear & brake adjustments)
5 mm Hex key (Depending on make & model Allen keys 3, 4, 5 & 6 mm may be used)
Wire cutters (To cut brake, gear cables and to crimp ends)
Spoke key (Too true buckled wheels)
Chain lubricant & grease (Dry-lube To lubricate brake & gear cables)
Workshop stand (optional)

Remove the bike from the box carefully and remove packaging. Fit seat post and clamp the bike in the workshop bike stand.

Pedals:

You will need to identify the Left and Right pedal, if fitted incorrectly can permanently damage the crank arm threads.

(R) Right hand threaded pedal (The threads are pointing to the right) This pedal fits the right-hand crank arm/the right-side of the bicycle and screws clockwise to tighten up.
(L) Left hand threaded pedal (The threads are pointing to the left) This pedal fits the left-hand crank arm/the left-side of the bicycle and screws anticlockwise to tighten up.
Put a little grease on the threads. Start by hand and tighten with the pedal spanner.

Handlebars and stem:

Grease clamp bolts before fitting handle bars.
Tighten clamp bolts evenly, there should be an even gap between clamp and steam top and bottom.
Check alignment of the steering

Continue.................

Align the stem with the front wheel.

Tighten pre-load A-headset bolt.
Tightening stem clamp bolts (to 5 Nm)

Tighten pre-load A-headset bolt.

The bolt compresses the stem down onto spacers. The preload bolt does not hold the fork onto the bike; after the preload is set, the stem bolts must be tightened to secure the fork in place. The adjustment must be made such that there is no play in the bearings, but allow the fork to turn smoothly without binding or excessive friction.

Align the stem with the front wheel.

Align steering before tightening stem clamp bolts (5-Nm)

Brakes:

V brakes.

Adjust brake lever reach for small hands, by screwing the reach adjustment screw-in to bring the brake leaver closer to the handlebars. On this bike the screw is found under the brake leaver.
Fit brake cables to brake levers
Lubricate inner brake & gear cables before sliding in to outer cable.
Fit cables to housing stops.

Correct brake adjustment..................

Wheel truing

Before the brakes can be adjusted correctly, the wheels need to be adjusted for correct alignment.

Using the correct spoke key, tighten the spoke on the opposite side to where the rim rubs the brake block 1/2 a turn at a time. (This is best to be done by a expert)

Fit brake cable to V-tube (Noodle) attach to caliper.
Align brake pads to rim, incorrect alignment can cause inefficient braking and uneven wear to brake pads.
Adjust cable tension and tighten pinch bolt.
Cut and crimp cable ends.

Gears:

Derailleurs need to be set-up correctly to avoid damage, rapid wear and for a smooth gear change.

Rear gear stop screws marked H for high gear & L for low gear. To adjust: Put the chain in to high gear (smallest sprocket at the rear) and adjust the H screw until the chain is exactly in line with the high gear sprocket.
Rear gear cable adjustment. To adjust: Put the gear into the second gear in from the smallest sprocket and adjust the gear cable so the derailleur is exactly in line with the sprocket the chain is on. (Turn the cable anticlockwise to move the derailleur to the left)
Adjusting L screw: Put the gear in to low gear the largest rear sprocket and adjust the L screw so the derailleur is exactly in line with the sprocket the chain is on.
Front gear adjustment screws. Marked H & L To set-up: Put chain in the low gear on the front chainring (Smallest chainring/inner chainring) and the low gear at the rear (The largest sprocket) Turn the L screw until the inner side of the derailleur touches the chain and then back off the screw 1/2 a turn. Now put the chain at the front on the middle chainring and adjust the cable so the derailleur just touches the chain. Put the chain in the highest gears (Smallest at the rear and biggest at the front) and adjust the H screw until the outer side of the derailleur just touches the chain and back off 1/2 a turn. Check the gears change correctly and the chain does not come off and fine tune if necessary, also carry out a road test. Front gear cable adjustment is found at gear shifter

Tyre Pressure:

Check valve alignment before inflating tyres.
Look at tyre sidewalls to see tyre pressures. This side wall shows Minimum 50 PSI Maximum 75 PSI

Adjusting bike to rider:

Now your bike is built you will need to set-up the saddle height and position.

The handlebar and brake levers to the correct position.

Road test of brakes and gears and make any final adjustments

Finding A Bicycle On ebay

"Buying a bicycle on eBay, usually means you are buying someone else's problem"

When looking for a bargain, it is likely these days that you will turn to eBay for a second-hand bike. While there are bargains to be had, when buying a second-hand bike, you need to be careful, because you may have a large repair bill to go with the bargain price. Even if the person is not intending to be dishonest, their idea of the perfect condition may mean clean but worn out. In recent weeks two of our repairers have given out bills of well over £100 to make a bike usable, even though they were described as "good as new".

There are a few things you should do when considering buying on eBay:

1) Never pay cash - always use one of the schemes that gives you protection.

2) Always collect in person - do not have it posted to you, and do not meet in some car park halfway.

3) Always ride the bike. Here is a quick road test checklist:

- Pedal quite hard in every gear front and rear. If there are any skipping and banging, assume that you are going to need a new chain, cassette, and chainrings. That is a big bill.

- If there is a grinding or wobble from the pedals that might mean another big bill.

- Check that the brakes work, especially that they release and apply evenly. Hydraulic brakes should work perfectly. While a new set of pads for a standard bike are usually a few pounds, disc brake pads are expensive.

- Does the steering feel free? Stiff or lumpy steering could a major repair.

4) Examine the tyres. Is the rubber perished? Are there odd bulges or cracks. Is there tread left?

5) If you are buying a bike with suspension, does it seem right - does the bike rock about with the front brake applied? If you are buying a bike with expensive forks, these are supposed to be serviced regularly and this usually means sending them away to the manufacturer - but most people don't bother. Forks often are 1/3 of the cost of a bike, so any suspicions, walk away.

6) Spin the wheels - are they straight? Minor wobbles can usually be sorted out, but it needs someone who knows to judge. Can you wobble them from side to side - loose wheels that have been left often end up with damage.

7) A clean bike does not mean it is a well maintained bike.

Over time there are parts of bikes that do wear out, including wheels, bearings, cables and the whole drive-train. For example, a chain usually lasts 2000 miles or less, and if it is not changed causes a lot of damage, so be wary of commuter bikes, even if they are carefully maintained. Off-roading and BMX are bikes designed to be abused, but therefore are prone to accident damage - the bargain is the mountain bike that is used on road, not the one owned by the expert who knows how to ride it, even if perfectly maintained!

To get the used bike back into a good condition, factor in replacing parts such as bearings, gear cables, brake pads, tyres and drive-chain

The other thing to bear in mind is that if you are buying an expensive bike at a bargain price when it comes to repairs, you need to decide whether you are going to maintain that quality or whether you are going to put cheaper parts on. Also, some old bikes can be difficult to get spares for, even if they are only a few years old.

It's always a good idea to have your bike checked over after buying on eBay by a mechanic for safety and wear of any parts.

Chain Care & Wear

A worn chain: Cyclists often speak of chain stretch and removing a link or two will fix the problem. This is not true!

The major cause of chain stretch is wearing away of the metal where the rivet rotates inside the bushing and not the side plates of a chain.

The effect of wear on a roller chain is to increase the pitch (spacing of the links), causing the chain to grow longer. Note that this is due to wear at the pivoting pins and bushes, not from actual stretching of the metal. The sprockets (in particular the larger of the two) suffer a grinding motion that puts a characteristic hook shape into the driven face of the teeth. (This effect is made worse by a chain improperly tensioned, but is unavoidable no matter what care is taken). The worn teeth (and chain) no longer provide smooth transmission of power and this may become evident from noise or chain slipping under load (Cycling uphill or cycling when standing up)

Chain wear indicator tool.

Is only used to indicate chain wear before it wears out the chainrings or before the chain brakes, after that point, it's too late and the tool is not required.

You can save money by caring for your bicycle between regular servicing.

Chain wear indicator tool should be used regularly by the owner or at regular service intervals.

For 7 to 10 speed chains:

If the indicator shows a reading between 0.5 - 0.75 worn, the chain should be replaced soon, before other components also start to wear out fast.

If the indicator shows 0.75 - 1.0 + worn then chain and cassette should be replaced together to avoid wearing out the chainrings and the new chain slipping on the old cassette.

Replace chain and cassette approximately no later than 2000 miles. This will depend on the use, conditions, cleaning and the type of oil used.

After replacing just a chain, then performing a road test, this would show if the chain runs smoothly on the old cassette as both may need changing, especially where the cyclist only uses one or 2 of their favorite sprockets/gears.

Whether the cassette needs replacing, will depend on how you ride, if you are in the high gear (the smallest cog) all the time. Then this will wear out the teeth on the sprocket and will require replacing the cassette.

For 11, 12 speed chains, ebikes and x 1 speed chain systems:

If the indicator shows a reading between of 0.5 worn, the chain should be replaced soon, before other components also start to wear out fast.

If the indicator shows 0.5 - 7.5 + worn then chain and cassette should be replaced together to avoid the new chain slipping on the old cassette and rapid wear to the new chain. Also the chainring should be checked and replaced if signs of wear or on road testing any noise or chain suck.

Replace chain & cassette approximately no later than 1500 miles. Ebikes replace chain approximately every 400 miles and cassette when necessary.

Chain wear indicator tool reading: ☺ 0 0.2 0.4 0.5 0.75 1.0 1.0 + ☹

0.75% = 1.59 mm wear per 300 mm of chain length. (1/16" per 12" or/24 links)

Campagnolo say: All Campy chains last between 2,000 - 5,000 miles As to Campagnolo wear check - Campagnolo recommends a chain longer than 132.60 mm (at 6 outer links) the chain must immediately be replaced.

To prolong the life of an eBike chain or x 1 system chain:

Change 1 gear at a time. Sram now upgrades eBikes to a 1 change at a time shifter.
Having mudguards fitted will help keep the chain clean

Why replace chain and sprockets at the same time?

Both sprockets and chain should be replaced in these cases since a new chain on worn sprockets will not last long and a new chain will eventually start jumping on the worn teeth of the cassette/freewheel.

Note: Some new bikes are fitted with poor quality parts and when checking a chain for wear, it will show wear at 0.5. KMC chains that are of poor quality will be marked with a "Z" on the chain. All other KMC Chains are high quality and good bike shops will stock KMC chains marked with an "X"

The rear derailleur

A rear derailleur has two main functions;

To move the chain from one sprocket to another.
To keep the chain under tension as you change gear from a large sprocket or chainring to a small sprocket or chainring. Or you would end up with a chain flopping around. So as your chain "stretches" the rear derailleur will take up the tension!

Other components that also start to wear out:

If you don't change your chain in time and continue to ride your bike, you won't only need to replace your cassette but also your chainset and jockey wheels often at great expense!

Worn teeth on the middle chainring

The teeth on this chainring are pointed like sharks teeth and hooked by a worn chain. This will also be caused by only using the middle chainring and not changing gear. (A common cause of chainring wear.) Chainrings can be replaced individually, on low-end bikes it normally makes sense as it's cost effective to replace the chainset.

Worn chain, lifts easy from chainring

Though skipping caused by worn cassette cogs and chain, skipping can occur when chainrings are worn out too. (When the teeth look like sharks teeth)

Teeth on jockey wheels worn

These jockey wheels have worn from by riding a bike with a worn chain, from lack of cleaning and lubricating. The teeth will thin and become pointed, especially the lower pulley. Worn pulleys will not be able to hold or guide the chain as well as newer pulleys, and shifting performance will suffer.

If your gears have become noisy or the chain is jumping, it is time to have your bicycle serviced/inspected to avoid wearing out your complete drive chain at extra cost.

Lubricating:

Regular lubrication with a suitable chain lubricant is essential and you should also consider replacing the chain on a regular basis to prevent it from wearing out the chainrings as quickly. The cardinal rule for long chain life is never to lubricate a dirty chain, as this washes abrasive particles into the rollers and acts like an abrasive paste. Chains should be cleaned before lubrication. The chain should be wiped dry after the lubricant has had enough time to penetrate the links.

Gear Adjustment (Cable operated):

Indexing: If a derailleur is correctly adjusted when it is installed or serviced this is the only adjustment that should have to be tweaked, later on, to accommodate cable stretch.

Gear cable adjustment for 9 & 10 speed rear derailleur every 500 miles. For 11 speed every 400 miles.

Using derailleur gears:

Not using your gears correctly will wear out your sprockets/chainwheel.

Keep pedalling forward. A derailleur leads the chain from one sprocket to another. The chain can only move sideways while it is also moving forward. For this reason, you can only shift while you are pedalling forward. The rear derailleur can usually shift under full load, but it is better for the chain to ease up a bit during the shift.

Even though a bike is "21 speed", it will not have 21 gear ratios with consistent steps between them. You are likely to find that the ratios on the middle chainring are closely duplicated by the gears on the smaller and larger chainrings.

For a "21 speed" bike, you have 3 ranges of 7 gears, NOT 21 gears. The ranges exist to minimize the amount of front derailleur shifting that is required.

Cycle Tech UK suggests quite sensibly, that you avoid using the "extremes", i.e. the smallest chainring with the smallest rear sprocket and the largest chainring with the largest sprocket. Using these combinations can lead to premature wear on your chain and sprockets.

What else to look out for:

Gear cables:

Are the most common cause of incorrect gear operation. Gear cables can become kinked, corroded and your gear shift will not be smooth adding wear to chain and sprockets. Cycle Tech UK recommends lubricating, inspecting cables regularly and replace once a year. Bike design's and rooting of cables though handle bars and frames is making it much harder to inspect cables for damage and wear, so cables should be changed regular to reduce failure.

Gear Hanger:

Before you try to adjust your rear derailleur, you should really make sure it isn't bent. The rear derailleur is the most fragile and exposed part of a bicycle, and they are always getting knocked. Aluminium frame bicycle have a gear hanger to stop damage to the frame, which the derailleur is bolted to.

When a derailleur hanger is bent, it is generally necessary to remove the derailleur to straighten it. Cycle Tech have a special tool, a bar with a sliding gauge on it, that screws into the hole in the hanger in place of the derailleur. This tool provides lots of leverage to straighten the hanger with, and has a gauge to judge when it is parallel to the rear wheel. A rough, on-road repair is sometimes possible by removing the derailleur and bending the tab with an adjustable wrench.

Online suppliers can often offer the widest range of bikes. But, your bike must be adjusted & checked to be 100% safe.

Bike out of the box. More than just turning the handle bars and fitting the peddles.

Professional assembly of your bicycle purchased online

It may be your first or a repeat online purchase, but it is vital your new bicycle is professionally assembled before using it.

This is known as a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) that requires proper assembly of your new bike from a box. Parts require checking using a torque wrench and checks must be made to ensure critical components are set up correctly.

This will ensure the bike is safe, giving it long-life and for you to have continued enjoyment.

The internet is where most people go to for the best deal

When you buy your new bike online it will be shipped in a box. A supplier will advise to; "Just turn the handle bars, fit the peddles and you are ready to go" Are you? It is essential that a professional checks your bike first.

Checks before dispatch by the supplier, do not guarantee your safety after handling in transit. Consider this very carefully as bicycle accidents can hurt!

Tip: When buying your new bicycle factor in the service and maintenance costs.

Pose a real danger to yourself and others

Doing it yourself means you need the correct tools. A torque wrench or know the feel for how tight the bar stem/bars, the steering, peddles and seat post bolts should be. Know how to set up the ride potion, to know if a component is functioning correctly, requires adjustment or has been damaged when being delivered.

Cyclists call us when it goes wrong

Quit often a customer brings a new bike in for repair they just brought online, saying the gears are not working correctly. On a closer inspection, the bicycle shows up more issues; misalignment of critical components, brakes rubbing, rounded of hex key bolt heads, loose steering and even the wrong size bike.

Our Technicians are always on-hand to get you back on the road, as soon as possible in a safe manor. The way we can get involved with a bike that has not been PDI'd by a professional, means carrying out a full PDI to make sure the bike is safe to be used on public roads after being seen by one of our Cycle Technicians.

Part of the PDI processes is the hand over, making sure the rider knows how to use the gears, when to check the tyre pressure and to what pressure, how often the chain needs oiling/cleaning and when the bike requires servicing.

For ebikes; advice is given on charging and storing the battery for reliability and long-life. Or this can mean an expensive non-warren replacement, if not maintained as manufactures recommendations.

'Good Practice' The bike trade also recommends a first service at 30 days from date of purchase, to make sure everything is running smoothly and make miner adjustments of brakes and gears, plus check the steering, wheels, crank for fitment and correct operation.

Its even more essential that ebikes are inspected more often. Particular the brakes and chain for wear. ebikes are much heavier on the brakes and drive-chain and require replacing parts more often, before wearing other associated components or complete failure, resulting in a expensive overhaul to bring the bike back to good working order.

Bicycles have become more sophisticated;

With Hydraulic brakes, electronic gears, motors, suspension, internal cabling, lighter bikes with different types of material (Combination of carbon, alloy, steel and plastics working together) more gears and a wider range, resulting in the drive-chain has less tolerance from wear, requiring more adjustments, checks and replacement of components at lower mileage intervals.

Demands from ever-changing consumer behaviors and manufacturers alike have made the changes with regards to improving rider satisfaction. Improvements in performance to higher spec bicycles and new model designs, coupled with the bike brands maintaining the sale price in a highly competitive market, means; cutting some manufacturing costs with the build quality and losing durability and long-life.

What this means is; every bicycle requires a service schedule by a professional with the specialist tools, determined by the style of bike and use. Or a 5 minute adjustment could become a 5 hour overhaul.

Whilst battery and motor technology is rapidly advancing, critical components on ebikes are being pushed to their limits with more system weight, especially on longer descents and heavier riders.

Warranty

Manufactures warranty is the same if you buy online or from a shop (Check reviews that the seller is a reputable dealer before you buy, especially with any returns) If you are buying a brand that is only sold online, check that replacement parts are available within a few days frame time and the procedure to make a claim. Some charge for returns while others offer this for free.

The frame normally has five years warranty and you should be able to return to any dealer that sell's the same brand. The frame would first need to be inspected and may require being sent back to manufacturer before a replacement is sent out. Your new frame may be the latest model and some components may need to be changed. If you require the frame swap, you will be charged for the time, if the bike is worn out, you will also need some new parts, cables and hoses as standard.

All the components have their warranty individually covered by their own grantee's and subject to the use, service and wear that is not covered.

Do keep a service history of servicing, miles and any parts that have been replaced. A Cycle Technician has trade accounts with all the brands and can do warranty returns on your behalf, subject to the manufacturers say so, after a report/inspection by the Technician has been made.

Healthy Energy Bar For Cyclists

As a convenient source for slow release of energy, that's tasty and healthy fuel for cyclists. Paleo & gluten-free energy bar packed with flavor and nutrition that are easy to make.

Made with natural sugar from fruits and not from processed or refined sugars, that give you energy spikes and then fast dips, unlike from natural fruits that also contain nutrition. Blended with almonds, coconut, dark chocolate and chia seeds.

Ingredients

Buy organic without any additives where possible

150 grams almonds (flakes or whole) Also add a few Macadamia Nuts

100 grams dried unsweetened cranberries. And/or add dried Apricots, Mango and/or Pineapple

200 grams pitted dates

2 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil

2 tablespoons grated 100% cacao (Chocolate)

1 tablespoon chia seeds (I buy already milled)

But experiment to figure out what works best for you and feel free to play with the ratios

Instructions

1. Add the almonds into a blender or food processor and mix at low speed for 1 minute

2. Chop the dates into 3rd's

3. Then combine the rest of the ingredients in a blender or food processor, pulse a few times to break everything up. Then blend continuously until the ingredients have broken down and start to clump together into a ball.

4. Turn out the mixture onto a piece of grease-proof paper, press into an even square. Wrap in the paper and for at least an hour.

5. Cut into the desired size of bars, wrapping each bar in plastic wrap to store in the fridge

Press into a square before slicing into bars.

Best to make the night before you need them, as any longer in the fridge there is a danger you will eat them all!

Cycling is a great way to keep fit, whether it's a new year start or a healthy lifestyle change it should be taken with the right mindset! But contrary to what you might think, you won't lose weight purely cycling!

Having an expensive bike doesn't mean you will cycle up hills any easier and any quicker. You can, however, start by losing some weight, buy a run of the mill bike and then use the money you saved buying your partner a present.

"This post is intended for those new to cycling and want to get in to shape"

One step at a time; you may have to lose weight first, to avoid hurting your knees, or you may not be enjoying cycling and then give up! (This will depend on your weight and the last time you cycled or done any type of physical exercise)

"Exercising & diet speeds up your metabolism and makes it easy to lose weight"

Diet is over 80% the way you will lose weight. Cycling in time will help burn off the stubborn fat around your belly, tone muscle/preserve muscle and increase your cycling performance.

Sleep and rest days are more important than riding days, your body needs time to recover after being stressed. Have a day or 2 of rest between riding, in fact, recovery is crucial to building you a leaner body.

Losing weight and getting fit - Needs to come from your vision, the right attitude and making sacrifices. By that I mean; if you plan to go for a bike ride Sunday morning, but you go drinking with your friends Saturday night! - If you don't change then in 10 years time things will be the same.

Preparation

First, visit your Doctor for a check-up and tell your Doctor what you intend to do. Especially if you have an office job or driving job where you are sat down all day. Or have an old injury or suffer from back pain, or better then a Doctor visit a good Chiropractor.
Having the right mindset - One step at a time. Start off slowly and don't expect to lose weight overnight!
Overdoing it and then not enjoying it, you could end up on what's called the yo-yo diet and putting more weight on then you started with!
Don't expect to cycle 20 miles or more including hills straight away without some pain.
Start by walking, even if it's to the shops and back, build up to doing 10,000 steps a day and/or include some hills.
Do some light exercises like squats - start by sitting on a chair and standing up and sitting back down. Try 3 sets of 6. This will help in getting the muscle used to working on your legs again.
Any chest pain while cycling - STOP, it could be that your body especially your heart or lungs as they are not used to it, but get checked out.
Change your diet slowly by removing fizzy drinks, fast food, and processed so-called foods and add more fruit and veg.
Having the right bicycle and setup to suit your needs, as many bikes have a maximum weight limit for the rider as there is a chance of breaking parts of the bike or injury. Bikes are made light with modern materials and are for someone of 14 stone or less.
Later you can add a more regimented workout routine, which will really help maximize all the other healthy lifestyle changes you've implemented.

Before jumping straight on to a bike

If you are going to jump straight on your bike:
Get some cycling undershorts to help your backside
Your bike setup - Correct tyres and pressure, handlebars and saddle are in the right position.
Know where you are going to cycle to and back, start by keeping it flat and keep it to 5 - 6 miles and increase slowly
Start off in a low gear to warm up.Stretch legs on return

Diet

There are so many diets out there it can get confusing, I have studied many of them and the only one that will not only get you to your optimum weight it will also build/heal your health. It's the Weston A Price Diet .

Eating a healthy diet is 80% to losing weight and maintaining health. Cycle/exercise, sleeping, and reducing stress is the other 20%.

Start by removing one or two of these items and adding whole clean foods.

Wheat should be the first thing you stop eating. (That's bread, pizza, pasta, bagels and cup cakes) As wheat increases insulin levels higher than sugar, that results in storing fat and a high risk of disease.

Eat all foods in moderation, increase portion intake using vegetables, then from meats, eggs and cheeses. (Do not over do protein as your liver needs to work harder and that go's for coffee intake on your kidneys)

Educate yourself:

Misleading food labels
The truth about fats
Not everything is created equally - you make think you are buying something healthy as in the past it was, until it was re-pressed and made cheap for profit
Carbohydrates - Not eating sugar and grains rains - rice, wheat, (Bread) spaghetti

What not to eat:

Wheat - Bread, pizza, pasta, bagels and cup cakes.Processed foods - Pies, cakes, ham, sausage, tinned meats, fast foods, takeaways, convenient foods.
Going out to restaurants keep to a minimum.
Bad fats - Vegetable oils, soy
Low fat - Anything that says diet on it.
Drinks -Alcohol, fizzy drinks, fruit juice (Only what you juice yourself)

What to eat:

Fresh vegetables and fruit - (Organic from local farm where possible) Sweat potatoes.
Bone broth - Soups (Made from animals that are grass fed and locally farmed chicken)
Good fats - Coconut oil, Olive oil, avocados, full fat butter from local farm, ghee.Meats - Grass fed and locally brought.
Drink - water, coconut water, juicing, water with a squeeze of lemon. Keeping hydrated while cycling is very important.
Energy bars - Try our home made bars for longer rides

Don't:

Don't go too long between meals and eating in a 8 hour window ( Breakfast at 9 am then last meal at 5 pm)
Don't miss pre-ride meal
Don't over eat carbohydrates (Eat all food groups in moderation) Don't drink coffee randomly

Give time from your body to change to running on fat and not storing it. This should be while you do moderate excursive and build up slowly. Make it a life change and not a fad!

Exercises

After a few weeks of walking you can move on to these two exercise:

TIP: I don’t advise using weights on your legs unless you can recover in time for your cycling workouts.

Get riding more

And start to see a difference

After a few weeks, set up a weekly cycle schedule of say twice a week as minimum.
Buy a computer - and see how fast, distance and total mileage, you are doing.
Set targets - A rout of say 2 hours with hills, and pace yourself and go a little faster each ride, then after a few weeks do in reverse.
Wet days or not much time - a turbo trainer or rollers that you have room to setup in your house, garage/shed or join a club for turbo sessions.
Cycle with friends, do a charity ride, join a local cycling club.
Training needs to be split between - short and intense, with long and slow

Dragon Ride L'Etape Wales 2017 Mechanical Support

Cycle Tech UK supports the 2017 Dragon Ride L’Etape Wales returned for its 14th.

In addition to the one day Dragon Ride on Sunday 14th June, some riders participated in the Dragon Tour: two additional days of cycling for those who are up for a multi-day challenge. The Dragon Ride distances ranged from 100-km up to the massive 305-km Dragon Devil ride, with a total of 3,544 riders participating. Cycle Tech UK provided 7 mechanics in their vans to support the Dragon Ride, with two of these also supporting the Dragon Tour. For the Ride, they were stationed at feed stations and strategic points on the route. Sunday weather was wet, dry, sunny and windy. These events are a good opportunity to market our network as riders come from all over the UK, it's always a busy day and riders tend to come all at once, with wanting tubes and borrow the pump being the main issues but anything can happen on the day! A BIG thank you to our mechanics for supporting and keeping riders wheels turning.....

Phil at feed station 2 had a constant stream of riders coming over to the van from 10 until 2, to have various ailments fixed. These included punctures, tyre replacements, chain replacement, vanishing chainring bolts and brake blocks, worn out cleats, broken pedals as well as gear indexing and end stop adjustments. The feed stations were well provisioned with energy products, food, water, and toilets, although a bike rack would have been a bonus considering the number of riders parked on the van.
