Buying a used electric bike
E-bikes have become very popular, particularly e-Mountain Bikes, for fun and getting out into the great outdoors.
This has meant a shortage of new e-bikes available and not everyone can afford £5k for a new one, so more people are turning to used e-bikes.
Somethings to think about before buying used
If you are new to cycling or e-bikes, then you may be shocked by the price of e-bikes and the cost of replacing the battery, or the motor.
E-bikes also need regular care and serving, if your used e-bikes has low mileage but has not been looked after, it could be an expensive repair.
Warranty is not always passed on, so don't assume you will have it. (Manufacturers ask for proof of purchase)
Service history - Make sure the motor bearings are not noisy and no fault codes showing. (If buying from a dealer ask about any warranty and if buying a BOSCH system, who is a dealer they can print the diagnostic report)
Make sure the bike has not been or has a speed device fitted, as this will put extra load on the battery and motor.
Buy from a reputable dealer and ask for a service checklist and what is coverd and what's not covered under the shop's warranty.
Bike inspecsion and report
Piece of mind - If buying privately, ask a Cycle Technician to inspect the bike, with a full report of the bike and the motor system, to save any costly repairs.
